The renowned Gabrieli Consort, with their artistic director Paul McCreesh, perform a wonderfully varied programme of English music, as diverse in the range of emotions explored as in the selection of composers from across the centuries.
The programme falls into two distinct parts, opening with a contemplative exploration of poignant sacred choral music for mourning and consolation, featuring composers from the seventeenth to the twenty-first centuries such as Orlando Gibbons, Henry Purcell, William Walton and Jonathan Dove. Following this reflective introduction, the programme culminates in more celebratory music, for which Gabrieli are joined for larger-scale works by perhaps the most famous of English composers, Benjamin Britten and Edward Elgar.
