Russie – New York

The All-Night Vigil is Sergei Rachmaninoff's (1873-1943) greatest choral masterpiece, a lush and often transcendent setting of traditional texts from the canonical hours of the Russian Orthodox Church. Written in 1915 for choir with alto and tenor soloists, its magnificent, soaring movements derive from ancient Kievan and Byzantine chants, many of which will be presented in this concert together with Rachmaninoff's settings.

« The mastery of the young performers, their steadfast sincerity and talent were wrapped in a veil of mystery by the elegant antique music, harmoniously united fury and great passion boiling in the spirit of the young American conductor, a man in love with Russia, with Petersburg and with Russian artistry. »

Created by conductor Steven Fox as the vocal complement to New York’s venerable Clarion Orchestra, the Clarion Choir has emerged as one of the country’s preeminent choral groups, with members equally at home on the solo stage and in ensemble singing. Today, the Choir’s repertoire reaches far beyond its original Baroque roots. In recent years, the Choir has earned widespread critical acclaim not only for its mastery of Monteverdi, Bach, Handel, Haydn, and Mozart, but also for its performances of Stravinsky, Rachmaninoff, Tavener, and Morton Feldman.

Musica Antiqua St. Petersburg was founded by Steven Fox in 2001 as Russia’s first period instrument orchestra. Dedicated to the performance of 18th and 19th-century repertoire on period instruments, the orchestra and its singers place special emphasis on the rediscovery and performance of neglected masterworks from imperial 18th-century Russia. The ensemble has performed in the Small Hall Philharmonie and the Hermitage Theatre in St. Petersburg, and on international tours to the United States and United Kingdom.
