The Capitole de Québec is proud to announce the presentation of La Cage aux folles, a Théâtre Capitole exclusive, from September 21 to October 16, in Québec City.
A total of 13 actors gather onstage to perform this outrageously zany comedy co-produced by TVT and Les Productions Lélie Inc., with staging by Normand Chouinard and artistic direction by Benoît Brière, who also plays the starring role of Albin (Zaza), with Alain Zouvi as Georges. After a truly memorable performance in Oscar, the great Benoît Brière promises a similarly explosive and audacious performance, and then some!
Georges and Albin (aka Zaza) are a gay couple who own a transvestite club called «la Cage aux folles», where Albin is the star drag queen. Georges' son Laurent pays his father a visit and announces that he is about to get married. His fiancée's parents, however, are very conservative and know nothing about their daughter's future in-laws... not to mention the fact that her father is a prominent member of the ultra-conservative party. To avoid upsetting his future in-laws, Laurent asks his father to play along with his attempt to portray their family in the most traditional terms, and even invites his biological mother to the upcoming family reunion. While all this is going on, Georges does everything to keep Albin away, but his efforts are in vain. Conflict erupts, and the situation degenerates quickly…
Written in 1973 by renowned French actor, producer and screenwriter Jean Poiret, La Cage aux folles has delighted nearly a million fans with more than 1,800 performances in France. A film version was later produced, meeting unprecedented success in both France and abroad. The silver screen production was the recipient of a Golden Globe Award in 1980. La Cage aux folles returned to the stage in Paris in 2009, more than 35 years after its creation.
