Junior Battles like the following: ‘90s CanRock, the Back to the Future trilogy, old pop-punk, The Wire, post-hardcore, and the works of Mike Judge. Rally is their second full-length and best attempt to assimilate all their interests into one listenable place.
Formed in 2007, Junior Battles was the unexpected offspring a successful off-off-Broadway musical version of Jaws (but really, Google it). Sam and Aaron took hours of harmonic practice and paired it with good buds and a mutual affection for the Alkaline Trio discography – seven years later and the only thing that's changed is the guitar parts, which are slightly more complicated.
Rally comes three years after their full-length debut, Idle Ages – they toured it, killed their van, lost money and got more reliable jobs. Without intending to write another album, Rally came out of intermittent writing sessions for an EP that quickly turned into something bigger – the accidental result of enjoying hanging out with your friends and realizing you still have a lot you want to say.
Recorded by longtime friend and producer Steve Rizun at Drive Studios in Toronto, Rally expands on the band's long-standing attempt to bring their other influences into the frame of pop-punk. While still rooted in Punk-o-rama comps and all ages shows, there's more Constantines than Descendents to songs like “Rafts” and more 54-40 than Dickies to songs like “Bunk.” When it came time to give a name to this new collection of songs, sports surfaced as a recurring metaphor and thematic bookend, a way of reflecting ecstatic highs and crushing lows. The word “rally” captured that – triumph that could just as easily have been defeat.
At this point, Junior Battles will probably be a band forever.
