East coast hip-hop would not be what it is today without De La Soul. Since its formation in 1987, the New York trio has distinguished itself from most of its contemporaries by introducing elements of funk, jazz, reggae and psychedelic into its music. Original members of the famous collective Native Tongue Posse, with A Tribe Called Quest and Queen Latifah, De La Soul also made its mark with its positive lyrics, contrasting with incendiary artists like Public Enemy. Today, rapper Posdnuos, Dave and Maseo continue on with the formula they themselves invented, and they’re getting ready to give us an eloquent demonstration.
