Quebec, Pop
Before their phenomenally worldwide success in the 1980s, with hits like Safety Dance and Pop Goes the World, Men Without Hats learned their trade in Montréal punk circles in 1977. Thanks to the distinct baritone of its principal composer Ivan Doroschuk, the electro-pop sound based on keyboard and drum synthesizers became the trademark of the album Rhythm of Youth, which sold over two million copies around the globe. While interest in new-wave doesn’t seem to be slowing down, the return of the Hats, along with the B-52s and The Human League, make this perfectly vintage sound shine again.
