United Kingdom, Rock
Somewhere between the Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin, The Who belongs to what could be called the foundations of purely British rock. Besides being the symbol of the British mod movement, with the anthem My Generation they also proclaimed angry youths’ cry of revolt in the mid-1960s. With four personalities as strong as those of the Beatles – the soaring voice of Roger Daltrey, the spectacular guitar of Pete Townshend, the clever playing of bassist John Entwistle, and the destructive pulsing of late drummer Keith Moon - The Who is a source of inspiration for much of American garage rock. Many hard-rock and punk bands are also inspired by their supercharged onstage energy and spirit. The celebrated rock opera Tommy remains, to this day, one of the most ambitious works in the whole rock repertoire. Exclusivity for the 50th edition of Festival d’été de Québec.
