Yes, they come from Sierra Leone. And they really did flee their native Freetown when the civil war wracked this West African nation in the 90s. Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars got their start in the refugee camps, where they spread a little joy and hope under truly terrible conditions.
In spite of their dismal origins, the band would rather send a positive message with their festive and sunny music, a mix of traditional African sound, reggae, dub and soul. Surfing the wave of their latest album, Radio Salone (released on April 24), Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars will be setting Place d’Youville ablaze.
