In 1995, Serbian filmmaker Emir Kusturica produced “Underground”, a satirical portrayal of the History of Yougoslavia since WWII. Slobodan Salijevic and his musicians interpreted two of the songs on the soundtrack, 'Kalashnikov' and 'Mesecina', which have become Balkan folk standards.
This helped Salijevic and his orchestra make their name outside Eastern Europe, even though they were already relatively well-known to brass band lovers. Today, the talented playing of Slobodan Salijevic Orkestar helps spread the gypsy tradition in festivals the world over.
