Prepared by Ensemble Anonymus, le Jeu de Robin et Marion (The Story of Robin and Marion) is a theatrical piece dating from the Thirteenth century and containing many songs. The story line comes from two medieval poetic traditions, the “pastourelle” and the “bergerette”.
At the edge of the forest, Aubert, a knight, meets Marion, a young shepherdess. He attempts to seduce her, but she is in love with Robin, a peasant, and spurns his advances. The knight departs and Robin appears. The two young lovers lunch on the sward. Robin then leaves to organize a country feast. The knight returns and finds Marion alone. He kidnaps her, but Marion resists with such determination that he finally releases her, after having thrashed Robin who had returned to his love. With the knight definitively out of the way, the villagers amuse themselves with games, and happiness again settles on the small community.
Ensemble Anonymus was formed in Québec in 1978 by a group of young professional performers united around Claude Bernatchez their musical director. These musicians’ passion for early music led them to resuscitate the musical traditions of medieval Europe. They have produced many high quality shows, concerts, and recordings that bear witness to their artistic accomplishments and the excellence of the members of Ensemble Anonymus.
