This year, The Image Mill™ turns into The Image Mill 3D – 2011 Edition. This renewed version of the famous projection now benefits from stereoscopic techniques that add depth to the visuals.
The architectural projection produced and performed, in Quebec City, by Robert Lepage and Ex Machina represents the largest projection ever done. It requires the use of fine technology to project a huge quantity of images and films on the grain silos of the Quebec Harbour, an oversized screen, 600 meters wide by 30 meters high! In the hands of the creators, this huge mass of concrete is in constant transformation, which gives us the strange impression of it being alive and talking to us. Leaving the usual clichés behind, we discover the fascinating history of Quebec City with its upheavals, its controversies, and its great political and popular moments.
Tuesday to Saturday, from June 28 to September 3
Starting at 10 pm in June and July
9:30 pm in August
9 pm in September
No performances on Sundays and Mondays
Except on July 24, 25, 31 and August 1
Extras on September 8 and 9
Stereoscopic glasses distribution
Glasses designed exclusively for The Image Mill 3D – 2011 Edition will be distributed inside the amplified area. Spectators should know that glasses designed for 3D or IMAX movies will not be compatible with the stereoscopic projection.
Where to see and listen to The Image Mill 3D – 2011 Edition
To experience and appreciate the work at its best and in all its dimensions, people are encouraged to position themselves on the docks, between the Old Port Market, Dalhousie Street, and Quay Saint-André Street.
The Mill frequency: 97,5 FM
Those who want to watch the mega project from outside this area should tune in to 97,5 FM on their personal fm radio. Digital radios will also be sold on site, so The Image Mill 3D – 2011 Edition soundtrack can be heard simultaneously.
The Image Mill™ was created as part of the festivities surrounding the 400th anniversary of Quebec City. Following the success of the 2008 edition, the work has been extended for another five years. In 2011, in addition to stereoscopy that creates a 3D effect, more than 30 % of the content has been revamped. For the next and last creative phase in 2013, it is 20 % of the content that will be redesigned, improved or enhanced with new material.
“We have invented a mill that transforms, animates, presents and celebrates the beauty of Quebec City. Now, with the 3D projection, we are adding depth not only to the visuals but to the stories we are telling as well.” Robert Lepage
