COLEMAN LEMIEUX & CO.
Directed by Bill Coleman and Laurence Lemieux, Coleman Lemieux & Co. are one of Canada's most captivating dance companies.

Their work combines turbulent movement with emphatic gestures, memorable tableaux and surprising moments of ethereal serenity. Choreographer James Kudelka's "Soudain l'hiver dernier", a remarkable and poignant duet for two men reflecting the human condition, is set to Gavin Bryar's haunting "Jesus' blood never failed me yet". Choreographer David Earle's "Miserere" is a heart-breaking portrayal of Allegri's forbidden composition and has been praised from coast to coast. The performance also features a new creation by Coleman & Lemieux.

Driven by Coleman and Lemieux, who are also life partners, CLC creates, produces and presents varied works on a local, national and international scale. The Company’s repertoire has toured across Canada, into the United States where they appeared at the Fall for Dance Festival in New York City, Jacobs Pillow and in several other major U.S. cities, to China as part of the Fifth International Dance Festival in Beijing, and to both Mongolia and Russia. In 2009, CLC made its first visit to Brazil, where they were invited to perform at the Porto Alegre em Cena Festival.

The company’s repertoire defines contemporary dance, with work that is eclectic, daring and technically sophisticated, a richly visual, emotionally arresting tapestry that is nourished by other talented choreographers and gifted artists from many disciplines. Since 2005, James Kudelka, CLC’s Resident Choreographer, has adapted some of his major works for the company. Other illustrious artists who have partnered with CLC include regular collaborators John Oswald, Daniel Taylor and Edward Poitras, as well as, on occasion, Margie Gillis, David Gaucher, Liz Vandal, Christopher Butterfield, Guillaume Côté, Heather Ogden, Andrea Weber, Robert Regala and Carol Prieur.

One of CLC’s most innovative and perhaps most ambitious ventures is a series of site-specific performances, the “Off the Beaten Track” series. Here, the company’s audacious genius is showcased when dance is taken out of its theatrical surroundings and transplanted into the heart of communities and their native landscapes, urban or rural. CLC opens up a poetic dialogue with participating communities about the relevance of dance, art and artistic expression, resulting in encounters that are magical, electrifying, and capable of accomplishing a subtle shift in consciousness that brings to life the poetry of living as individuals within a collective setting. The success of these events underscores the company’s social consciousness and its desire to offer richly stimulating artistic experiences. Lemieux and Coleman continue in their outreach efforts to revitalize the place of dance and art in our society.

Since its inception, CLC has received significant press coverage from both print and broadcast media in Canada, Russia, Scotland and Mongolia. Director Anne Troake made a critically- acclaimed film, The Gros Morne Project: Feel the Earth Move, documenting a CLC “Off the Beaten Track” event in Newfoundland. Later that year, the company undertook the adaptation of James Kudelka’s powerful masterpiece, Fifteen Heterosexual Duets, which spurred Laurence Lemieux to initiate a book project that was published by Dance Collection Danse Press/es.

CLC is actively engaged in the dance world, regularly hosting workshops and participating in conferences and showcases. Coleman and Lemieux are committed to the development of dance, and often act as mentors for a new generation of dancers and choreographers.

CLC is supported by the Canada Council for the Arts, Canadian Heritage, the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec, Ontario Arts Council, the Conseil des arts de Montréal, the Toronto Arts Council, the Ontario Trillium Foundation and the Metcalf Foundation.
